Writer Sergey Dovlatov (1941-1990) stands out in Russian literature for having placed his works on the border between fierce testimony and playful exaggerations about life. His independent way of thinking was fresh and reviving for many people during the Soviet times and it still is today. In 1979, after being expelled from the Union of Soviet Journalists and conscripted to military service, Dovlatov left Russia and moved to New York where he was free to publish his first two novels Kompromis (”The Compromise”) and Zapovednik (”The Nature Reserve”).

ROMAN DREAMS

[По-русски см. ниже] This exhibition of the St. Petersburg artists is a result of their three-month stay as fellows of Joseph Brodsky Memorial Fund at the American Academy in Rome in 2010.

The luxurious abundance of marble and flying figures in Roman churches and cathedrals occasioned Ivan Govorkov to create a series of drawings Marble. “I am imbued with the museum figurative classics at the subconscious level. And this subconscious, devoid of goals or ideas, is revealed in my drawings”. The artist draws spontaneously and aimlessly, allowing his hand to glide over the paper on its own as if revealing the invisible. Several works by Ivan Govorkov from a different graphics series Arachne are, on the contrary, full of subjects from the mythology. The artist, who has spent so much of his life on the classic art, seems to reflect ironically on “excessiveness” of the baroque style.

Probing the nature of loss is central to many of Peter Belyi’s works.
We see before us objects that have been taken out of their natural order with the help of effective manipulation – a cold, artificial light. Time has left its mark upon them, such that their connection to the natural order, to the natural way of things, is evident. Continue reading “Petr Belyi – “A Doomed Forest””

RUBBER PRODUCT №…

It seems like galoshes were called product “number one” by the language of soviet official papers. They were dull and unpleasant, according to those days’ fashion, but now they became amusing and even stylish. In the same time it is a bit creepy thing, if you remember the unforgettable “Krasnyj Treugolnik” (“Red Triangle”) – a place of forced labour, called “chemistry”, where galoshes were produced. Rubber product “number two” was a condom – an amusing, indecent and even secret, but very unpleasant thing, according to soviet way of thinking. Now it is banal, like a sugar candy. There are also enemas, pipettes, pacifiers, gas masks, police batons – tools of salvation and suffering.

In short – rubber is not an ordinary material. Continue reading “Vladimir Kozin – “RUBBERS””
