CYLAND Participates at The Magician’s Hat Exhibition in Moscow

The Magician’s Hat opens on December 23, 2015 at the Solyanka State Gallery (Solyanka street 1/2, bld. 2) in Moscow. The exhibition will be on display until February 23, 2016.

CYLAND MediaArtLab artists Anna Frants and Elena Gubanova participate at The Magician’s Hat exhibition the Solyanka State Gallery in Moscow. The exhibition is dedicated the moomins and other idols of childhood.

The Moomins are the children of the outstanding Scandinavian storyteller (and also the artist and poet) Tove Jansson. Not only did she invent her characters, but, unlike Astrid Lindgren (creator of the hero of last year’s hugely popular Karlsson-on-the-Roof Exhibit at Solyanka), she also illustrated her own books. More specifically, she first drew them and then accompanied the result with words, hence the primacy of the image in this case.

Anna Frants. VISIONARY DREAMS №3268-72

December 22 – 26, 2015
Video and Audio Installations
Borey Art Center
St. Petersburg, Liteyny Prospekt 58
Vernissage on December 22 at 18:00

As in previous years, Anna Frants presents video and audio installations. The artist’s works become partly fantasy and partly an instinctive immersion, intertwined with programming and robotics. This year’s exhibition continues the series of works “Personal Space” begun in 2015, dedicated to the phenomenon of attachment/love to the inanimate. In “Other Shores,” Nabokov called it an “individual secret”: “With unexplainable tranquility, I looked through the glass at a handful of distant diamond lights, shimmering in the blackness of distant hills, and then as if slipping into a velvet pocket. Subsequently, I distributed such treasures to the heroes of my books, to somehow get rid of this wealth.”

OVERCOMING THE EVERYDAYNESS. CONTEMPORARY ART FROM ARMENIA

This project is about the city, focusing on those places where criticism and non-compliance with the general routine are possible. It’s about recognizing “moments” which, according to Henri Lefebvre, “raise questions about the relationships between social life and nature and erase the conventional boundary between nature on one side and society and culture on the other, showing that the individual cannot be separated from society.” How do these “social relationships and forms of individualized consciousness” disrupt everyday accepted norms? How do these “moments” contribute to the formation of this other, invisible city described by artists? How tangible and real is it? Or are the artists themselves creators of this marginal space, explored and owned by them? Continue reading “OVERCOMING THE EVERYDAYNESS. CONTEMPORARY ART FROM ARMENIA”
