Writer Sergey Dovlatov (1941-1990) stands out in Russian literature for having placed his works on the border between fierce testimony and playful exaggerations about life. His independent way of thinking was fresh and reviving for many people during the Soviet times and it still is today. In 1979, after being expelled from the Union of Soviet Journalists and conscripted to military service, Dovlatov left Russia and moved to New York where he was free to publish his first two novels Kompromis (”The Compromise”) and Zapovednik (”The Nature Reserve”).

ROMAN DREAMS

FRANTS GALLERY SPACE (NY)

[По-русски см. ниже] This exhibition of the St. Petersburg artists is a result of their three-month stay as fellows of Joseph Brodsky Memorial Fund at the American Academy in Rome in 2010.

The luxurious abundance of marble and flying figures in Roman churches and cathedrals occasioned Ivan Govorkov to create a series of drawings Marble. “I am imbued with the museum figurative classics at the subconscious level. And this subconscious, devoid of goals or ideas, is revealed in my drawings”. The artist draws spontaneously and aimlessly, allowing his hand to glide over the paper on its own as if revealing the invisible. Several works by Ivan Govorkov from a different graphics series Arachne are, on the contrary, full of subjects from the mythology. The artist, who has spent so much of his life on the classic art, seems to reflect ironically on “excessiveness” of the baroque style.

Americans use the word “elevator” for a device that Russians and English call a “lift”. But whatever it’s called, essentially it’s a lifting device – something that lifts us off the ground, and like the mythological Antaeus, we temporarily lose our strength when detached from the ground. In this installation, a video projector, screeching along a rail and projecting the video of an elevator shaft on the wall, reminds us of this anxiety. However, we see slides that a pair of old Kodak projectors display at our feet level, and these impressions firmly keep us grounded.

CYBERFEST 2011’s theme is “Show Us Your Tongue!”, a curatorial title embodying this years’ participants who all address the philosophical question: “Are new technologies capable of creating a new tongue of art?”
