In “Changing Landscapes 3”, twelve films/video works selected from CYLAND’s Video Archive create together a genuine, introspective look at contemporary Russian New Media. These videos / films by active Eastern European artists offer personal perspectives into the continuum of their native country’s past, present and future. Pieces by established, recognized artists Boris Kazakov, Yuri Vasiliev and Ludmila Belova, Marina Alexeeva, Dimitri Lurie are joined by early works by Maxim Svishev, Masha Sha, Anton Khlabov and the “Upward!” community – each embodying artistic development within the age of digital technology in Russia.

11th CYFEST in St. Petersburg, Russia

This year, CYFEST is partnering with Lumen to exhibit in St. Petersburg 2016 Lumen Prize Gold Award winner Hyperplanes of Simultaneity by Fabio Giampietro and Alessio de Vecchi and the 2017 Founders Award, Slide to Expose by by Nicole Ruggiero, Molly Soda, and Refrakt alongside a showreel of selected moving image works.

The human being is constantly looking for a comfort zone. Changes induce anxiety and a desire to stick to the already known, familiar and comfortable. We suggest to treat changes in the realm of the digital technologies, which became integrated to our mundane life, as if they were the weather patterns. As something that is beyond our control, but what directly affects our routine.

The Proxima project (from Latin, meaning ‘‘nearest’’) unites artists which carry out observations of the world around. The represented works are all based on an attempt to get closer to things via various repetitive actions. The flow of imitations, the strive to recreate a kind of habitual landscape expose the fact that the perception of the nearest — objects and time — is ever mediated. We are only able to grasp fragmentary, to get close selectively and if doing so unable to recognize.
